Legion hosting flag retirement event

The Three Rivers American Legion, Hice-Shutes Post 170, is staging a flag-retirement event at 4 p.m. Thursday in the post parking lot.

Organized to coincide with Flag Day, the ceremonial flag-burning event will retire flags that are tattered, faded and no longer fit to be displayed in a dignified manner.

Post 170 member Keith Clark said the legion has collected from the public more than 100 old flags, which will be retired as part of the 20-minute ceremony.

American Legion members will be joined by representatives from area service organizations and military groups.

Clark also noted that the post sells new United States, State of Michigan, POW/MIA and branch of service flags, all made in the USA.
