The third of seven river cleanups in St. Joseph County yielded a floor safe, 22 tires and an assortment of other debris Saturday.
Spearheaded by the St. Joseph County Conservation District, the cleanup effort took place on an eight-mile stretch of the Fawn River from Halsey Square Road to the Fawn River Road bridge.
The event was originally slated to cover a stretch of the Prairie River but was moved because of the low water level in the Burr Oak Township stretch of the river.
Organizers and 10 volunteers noted portions of the Fawn River were so low that they had to walk their watercraft over sandbars and exposed rocks.
The next river cleanup by the county agency is set for a stretch of the Pigeon River July 14.
