Fundraiser to support military successful

An annual fundraiser to support military members injured during combat drew nearly 400 people at the Lee and Peggy Fassett residence in Park Township.

Peggy Fassett said donations raised through the fourth annual Homes for Our Troops exceeded $7,000, the most in the event’s short history.

The gathering Saturday evening featured a hog roast and other food, live music and a strong camaraderie of support from residents throughout St. Joseph County and beyond.

The recipient of the money raised will benefit Kenneth Harker, an Evansville, Ind., soldier who lost both legs during his second deployment in Iraq in 2008. The money will go toward construction of a new, barrier-free house for Harker and his family.

Fassett said Homes for Our Troops currently does not have a need to build a house in Michigan.
