George E. Pierce, age 75, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, July 14, 2012, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Mich.
He was born Jan. 28, 1937, in Sturgis, Mich., the son of Raymond and Majel (Barrett) Pierce.
George was a lifelong Sturgis resident and a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1955 and continued his education at Purdue University in East Lafayette, Ind.
On April 24, 1959, he married Carol M. Young at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis by the Rev. Richard Dunkleburger.
George retired from Burr Oak Tool & Gauge Company in Sturgis following 45 years of dedicated employment as an engineer. For several years he was an instructor in the apprenticeship program at Glen Oaks Community College assisting students in earning their journeymen’s card.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis and a life member of B.P.O. Elks in Sturgis and was a longtime member of the Klinger Lake Country Club. George was a faithful fan of the Michigan State Spartans and enjoyed bowling playing golf, traveling and watching golf and tennis. He was a strong supporter of Sturgis High School athletics and loved time spent with his grandsons and could always be counted on to be in attendance at all their activities.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; two daughters, Cheryl (Alan) Neiser and Cathy (Jeff) Lindsley, both of Sturgis; one son, Craig (Kendra) Pierce of Burr Oak; three grandsons, Joshua (Sabrina) Lindsley and Erik Neiser, both of Sturgis and Matthew Pierce of Burr Oak; sister-in-law, Anna (Stan) Holtz of Burr Oak; brother-in-law, Grover (Camilla) Young of Sarasota, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 4–7 p.m. Tuesday at their home located at 1211 Wilson Ave. in Sturgis where an Elks Memorial service will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A memorial service celebrating the life of George E. Pierce will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Patricia Ramsden will officiate.
