Paddle Poker Run being planned

The St. Joseph County Conservation District has announced it is planning a paddle poker run, a fundraiser to help raise money for the agency’s river and riverbank cleanup efforts.

Conservation District officials said they recently cleared the hurdles necessary with the state in order to stage the lottery-type event.

The paddle poker run will take place Sept. 2 on the St. Joseph River, starting in Mendon and ending at Covered Bridge Park.

Along the six-mile route, participants will select a playing card at various points and the person with the best poker hand at the end of the trip wins a cash prize.

More details about the inaugural fundraiser will be provided later, though event organizers said people who wish to canoe and not participate in the poker run portion are welcome.
