Shirley Ruth Mathews, age 85, of Three Rivers, passed away suddenly on Friday, July 20, 2012 at Three Rivers Health of cardiac arrest after years of battling with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born on Dec. 4, 1926 in Three Rivers, MI. the daughter of Harold and Mae (Kaiser) Langton.
Shirley has been a lifelong resident of Three Rivers. She graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1944. She attended college at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago in 1949 and became a registered nurse. On Oct. 27, 1951 she was united in marriage to Dr. John Mathews whom preceded her in death. Shirley was employed for many years at the Three Rivers Medical Clinic where she made many lifelong friendships.
Mrs. Mathews has been a long time member of the Three Rivers Bible Church where she was very active. She served as a borad member of the South Central Chapter of Child Evangelism Fellowship for over forty years. She was also a member of the St. Joseph County Nursing Association, and served as a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Drives.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory, loving family, daughters, Mary (Michael) Miholer-O’Conner, Julie (Rick) Nemire, Lois (David) Motz, and Lori (Greg) Southland; all of Three Rivers; sons, James (Fayma), of Kalamazoo, Kent (Becky), Douglas (Lilly) Mathews, both of Three Rivers; twenty-two grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 23, 2012 at the Hohner Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at the Three Rivers Bible Church 220 N. Erie St; Three Rivers, MI 49093 with Pastor Jay Bailey officiating with a luncheon to follow.
Interment will be held at the Moorepark Cemetery.
