Out and About – Week of August 13th

Once again, I make the comment, “We have to be living in Michigan. Ninety degrees one day, only to have temps in sixties the next.” It’s getting to the point at which you don’t want to put away your winter or summer clothes. You never know what the weather will be from one day to the next.

The Olympics are finally over. We’ve enjoyed watching them every evening. I feel that they were the ultimate reality show, without all the fake drama. Every Olympian is a winner, whether they won a medal or not. Just qualifying for the Olympics, and participating, is an accomplishment that most of us will never achieve. The talents and accomplishments of each of the athletes are to be admired. I place each participant above any politician also competing for a place in the history books. The word of the week is “Integrity”. Some have it, and some do not.

I try to let everyone know about things to do that are FREE, and for the family. The village of Constantine knows this, and is offering “Art in the Park” this Wednesday, August 15, from 3:30 to 5:30 P.M. It all happens at Rotary Park, 165 North Washington Street, in Constantine. Washington Street may be better known as US-131. It’s on the east side of the highway, as you come into the village. If you have children ages four to fourteen, take them down there and have them create their own mask. You don’t need to take anything with you except your imagination. They will provide paints, feathers, glitter, and rhinestones.

The American Red Cross is always in need of blood. The best way for them to add pints to their inventory is to have a blood drive, and that is exactly what they are doing. This Wednesday, August 15. from 11:30 A.M. to 5:15 P.M., they will seek volunteers to stop by the JOCO Center, 805 Wood Street, in Three Rivers, and give a pint or two. This is just another event that is FREE. As a matter of fact, they will probably offer you a glass of juice for giving of your time and blood. Remember, it is more fun to give than it is to receive.

Fans of Opera have the opportunity to experience it right here in Three Rivers every month. The Riviera Theatre, in historic downtown Three Rivers, is the place to go, and Tuesday, August 21 at 6 P.M., is the time. The opera is Norma. It is presented in high definition, on the big screen, in Italian, with English subtitles. Admission is $16.

The Three Rivers Community Players invite you to their production of Murder’s in the Heir. This summer production opens this Friday, August 17, at 7 P.M. Performance dates are August 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, and 26. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7 P.M., and the two Sunday matinees start at 2 P.M. Adult tickets are $15, and tickets for students and senior citizens are $13. You may arrange for tickets at Beam Sound and Video. Phone Rodney at (269) 279-6251. Tickets will also be available at the door. The Players’ Theatre is located off Millard Road, just behind Dairy Queen, in Three Rivers. If you’ve never experienced the Players’ Theatre, you must do so. It has an intimate atmosphere and abounds with talent from the local and surrounding areas. There is no need to travel to Kalamazoo or South Bend to experience the fine arts. They exist right here in your own backyard.

The Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce invites all interested golfers to join them in their annual golf outing at Sauganash Golf Club, on Lutz Road, just south of Three Rivers. The outing takes place next Tuesday, August 21, with registration at 10:30 A.M. and a shotgun start at 11. They are even going to have a putting contest, which gives all participants a chance to win $5000.

World Fare, 37 North Main Street, in Three Rivers, will host their annual “Back to School Celebration” this Saturday, August 18, from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. They are currently accepting donations of book bags, crayons, markers, glue sticks, paper, pencils, folders, and notebooks. These items will be used to fill backpacks for area school children. Donations may be dropped off at World Fare.

See you Out and About!
