Out and About – Week of August 27th

The St. Joseph County Grange Fair is still a couple of weeks away. The dates this year are from September 16 through September 22. If the weather continues the way it has been, we should have Mother Nature on our side. Brochures can be picked up at the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce office at 57 North Main Street, Three Rivers, or at other merchants in Three Rivers and Centreville.

I mentioned the Animal Rescue Fund’s Cutest Pet Contest last week. I now remind you that the deadline for entering your family pet in the contest is Tuesday, September 4. Entries should be mailed to the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) in Centreville by the fourth. Voting will take place at the St. Joe County Fair during Fair Week, September 16 through 22. Cast your vote at the ARF booth in barn number 42. Questions can be answered by calling Rodney at Beam Sound and Video in Three Rivers. The phone number is (269)279-6251.

Labor Day weekend is this weekend. Several things you’ll want to remember: gentlemen, white shoes are not cool to wear after Labor Day; garbage pick-up will be a day later next week; if you travel, take your time, and arrive back in Wildcat Country safely. I almost forgot: school starts the day after Labor Day. As you travel Out and About, watch for the flashing lights of the school buses.

With the approach of fall next month, we have only a few more Saturdays to take advantage of the Three Rivers Farmers’ Market in Scidmore Park, just west of the railroad tracks on West Michigan Avenue. From 9AM until 2PM every Saturday, you may peruse the many items available for purchase. Not only do they have fresh vegetables, but, if you’re into arts and crafts, those items are also there for your selection. With the weather we’ve been experiencing, it might not be a bad idea to pack a lunch, check out the Farmers’ Market, visit the petting zoo, let the kids play in the playground, and then enjoy your lunch near the lighthouse, where the three rivers come together. Is this heaven? No, it’s Three Rivers, our hometown.

The St. Joseph County Commission on Aging has been hosting a computer class at the Three Rivers Community Center, 103 South Douglas, in Three Rivers, Mondays from 6 to 7PM. The class will continue until Monday, September 10. I doubt that there will be a class this Labor Day. The cost is $10, and you need to take your own laptop. For more information and to register, please contact the Commission on Aging at 279-8083 or 1-800-641-9899.

Kline’s Resort will host another concert this Sunday, September 2, at 6PM. His Harmony, a men’s quartet, will perform, along with soloist James McDuffy. A Love Offering will be taken. This is an outside concert, so you should take along your lawn chairs. Kline’s Resort is located five miles south of Vicksburg, off Silver Street. It’s a peaceful way to celebrate the Labor Day weekend.

The Three Rivers Senior Center will be closed for ceiling tile replacement from Thursday, September 13, through Friday, September 21. But don’t worry; seniors will still have a reason to get Out and About. Here’s a list of what and where to go to have some fun:

Friday, September 14 – Meet at the Carver Center, 436 Jefferson Street, Three Rivers, for lunch, bingo, and beading from 10AM until 2:30PM.

Monday, September 17 – Meet at the Constantine Senior Center from 10AM until 4PM for lunch and bridge.

Tuesday, September 18 – Meet at Main Street Cafe, downtown Three Rivers, for lunch only, from 11:30AM to 1:30PM. Restaurant tickets will be available.

Wednesday, September 19 – Meet at the Carver Center from 10AM to 3:30PM for lunch, euchre, cribbage, and crafts.

Thursday, September 20 – Constantine Center for lunch and bridge from 10AM to 3:30PM.

Friday, September 21 – Lunch, bingo, and monthly birthday party at the Carver Center from 10AM to 2:30PM.

Have a safe Labor Day weekend. See you Out and About!
