Smoke damage to residence

An electrical problem is the suspected culprit of a fire that caused heavy smoke damage to a residence in the 69000 block of Nottawa Road in Sturgis Township Friday morning.

Tri-Township firefighters saw flames from the rear of the home upon their arrival. The lone occupant, whose age was not immediately available, escaped without injury.

The resident told officials he was awakened by heavy smoke and became disoriented as he tried to find the back door. He was able to find a window and break out safely.

Investigators from the Michigan State Police believe the cause of the fire was the result of an overloaded power supply cord.

The rear portion of the home sustained extensive damage, while the front had heavy smoke and water damage, fire officials said. The fire spread to a unattached garage, but damage to that structure was minor.
