Volunteers needed for river cleanup

Members of the St. Joseph County Conservation District and 18 volunteers removed approximately 500 pounds of debris from a stretch of the Nottawa Creek last weekend.

The three-mile stretch, from the Shorts Road bridge to the Fulton Road bridge in Leonidas Township, resulted in the recovery of two sunken aluminum boats, an extensive amount of glass bottles and aluminum cans, a tire, a plastic chair and a variety of other objects.

The agency’s next river cleanup will be August 25, on the St. Joseph River, beginning at the Farrand Road bridge in Colon Township and ending at the Jacksonburg Road bridge in Leonidas Township.

Volunteers should arrive at the Jacksonburg Road bridge around 9:30 a.m. and they will be transported upstream to the put-in location.

Prospective volunteers may contact Jen Miller at 467-6336, Ext. 5.
