Commissioners discuss budget

Discussions regarding budget requests from various county departments started Tuesday, when members of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners staged the first of what could be a number of workshops related to the county’s 2013 fiscal-year budget.

The three-hour special session featured a thorough review of requests from various departments.

Though no concrete decisions were made, recommendations were tentatively approved. Meanwhile, the discussion allowed commissioners to organize capital-needs requests between imperative, essential and non-essential.

Requests included a new, all-terrain vehicle for parks and recreation, funding to qualify for state and federal grants for road and bridge repairs for the road commission, additional money to the county clerk’s office to help cover an increase in staff workload, and a variety of needs at the county jail and sheriff’s department.

Commissioners during their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday next week will likely set the date for a follow-up workshop.
