Darl Gunthorpe, 80

Darl Duane Gunthorpe, age 80, of Westerville, Ohio, and a former lifelong Sturgis resident, passed away early Monday evening, Sept. 17, 2012, at the St. Anns Hospital in Westerville, Ohio.

He was born Aug. 24, 1932, in Bronson, a son of Maurice and Iola (Bidwell) Gunthorpe.

Darl was a lifelong Sturgis area resident.

On July 24, 1954 he married Beverly Sue Holtzapple in Sturgis. She died Dec. 6, 1985.

He was a member of the Michiana Deaf Club, the Michiana Seniors Group and the Alumni Association of the Flint School for the Deaf. He enjoyed bowling, playing softball and traveling.

Darl is survived by one daughter, Pamela (Michael) Picker of Sturgis; one son, Mark Gunthorpe of Portage; two grandchildren, Mark Gunthorpe of Portage and Amber Barton of White Pigeon; three great grandchildren, Montana Barton, Chad Barton and Miranda Gunthorpe and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two brothers, Dean Badder and David Badder.

In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Sturgis Memorial Gardens in Sturgis. The Rev. Cal Kolzow of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis will officiate.
