Doris M. Nelson, age 90, of Sturgis, passed away Monday morning, Sept. 17, 2012 at Thurston Woods Village.
She was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Clarence and Florence (Merchant) Bunnell.
Doris had resided in Burr Oak and Sturgis all her life.
On June 11, 1938, she married Irvin F. Nelson in Sturgis. He preceded her in death Jan. 7, 1997.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and had been employed by the Sturgis Hospital for 28 years, retiring in 1984, and she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Surviving are a son, Irvin “Jerry” (Linda) Nelson of Burr Oak; two daughters, Mary Lou (Jack) Sears of Sturgis and Kathleen (Richard) Yeckley of Sturgis; eight grandchildren, Jack L. Sears Jr., Kimberlee Hart, Jeremy Nelson, Megan Beaudoin, Jeff Swett, Angela Swett, Kristine Wright and Scott Swett; numerous great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter, Loretta May; a grandson, Matthew Sears; a granddaughter, Cynthia Brundige; and half-brother, Richard L. Bunnell.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 4-7 p.m. today, Tuesday at Hackman Family Funeral Home, Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis.
Services celebrating the life of Doris M. Nelson will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Cal Kolzow, Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.
Graveside services and interment will follow in Burr Oak Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations be directed to Thurston Woods Village, 307 N. Franks Ave., Sturgis, MI 49091. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
