Gerald L. DeCair, age 70, of Colon, and formerly of Union City, passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
Gerald was born Oct. 30, 1941, in Dalton Township, Mich., a son to the late Lawrence H. and Mildred A. (Ware) DeCair.
Gerald grew up in the Union City area and graduated from Union City High School with the Class of 1960 moving to Colon this past year.
He had served in the U.S. Army earning the rank of Sargeant.
Gerald had worked at the Union Pump Co. in Battle Creek for many years and later for Flow Serve out of California where he had serviced pumps at many Nuclear Plants, retiring in 2005.
He had attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Colon, was a life member of the Athens V.F.W., and a member of the Colon American Legion Post #454 where he was currently the commander.
He is survived by one son, Dustin DeCair and fiancée Keri of Burlington; two daughters, Rebecca DeCair of Maryland, and Cassondra DeCair of Maryland; several grandchildren with one special grandson Dillon DeCarir; his fiancée Carol Campbell of Colon; sister Phyllis Kotecki of Constantine;2 brothers, Richard L. DeCair of Miami, Fla., and Larry L. DeCair of Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Laila Jarrett.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Gerald L. DeCair will be Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor David Grimm officiating. Cremation will follow. A graveside committal service will take place Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 at 11 a.m. at South Colon Cemetery will military honors conferred by the Colon American Legion Post 454 and Athens V.F.W.
If desired the family ask that memorials be made in memory of Gerald to the Colon American Legion, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
