Officials responsible for a $1.3 billion pipeline project in Indiana and Michigan said a staging area in Mendon Township has received all of its 110 miles of pipe, concluding a major component of the undertaking.
Joe Martucci, Enbridge spokesman for the so-called 6B Replacement Project, said the 72-foot-long steel pipes have been shipped since July from a railroad site in Kalamazoo to a 40-acre parcel at the northeast corner of Heimbach Road and Silver Street.
Enbridge is replacing its 210-mile, refined-oil pipeline from Northwest Indiana to an area near Port Huron.
The Mendon Township site is the largest of four staging areas for pipe to be used in the replacement line. Martucci said the pipe being stored locally will be laid from the Indiana state line to a point in the Ingham County community of Stockbridge.
In St. Joseph County, the pipeline route moves in a northeast direction, covering 14 miles starting in the northwest corner of Fabius Township, through a small section in the southeast portion of Flowerfield Township, across all of Park Township and passing through most of Mendon Township.
