Seventh river cleanup this summer

A team of 11 people lent a hand Saturday in a cleanup of the Pigeon River between U.S. 12 and Blue School Road in Mottville Township.

The seventh river cleanup this summer, spearheaded by the St. Joseph County Conservation District, yielded nearly 300 pounds of debris, including rusted farm equipment, tires, a porcelain toilet, and an assortment of litter, including bottles and cans.

Early in the journey, volunteers came across a location where excessive debris had been pushed into the river from an adjacent farm field. The location was marked by GPS coordinates and several bales of wire and a refrigerator will be retrieved later when appropriate tools are on hand.

A decision on whether to stage a season-ending cleanup effort and a potential location Sept. 29 will be decided soon by Conservation District officials.
