Still investigating hit-and-run incident

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department is continuing its investigation into a hit-and-run incident involving a bicyclist earlier this week in Sturgis Township.

Department officials said White Pigeon-area resident Delmer Gayheart, 42, was riding his bike east on Fawn River Road Tuesday, when he was hit by an eastbound vehicle around 2:30 p.m.

The driver of a blue-gray Chevy or Pontiac failed to stop after the collision. Police said the suspect vehicle should have damage to the passenger-side mirror.

Gayheart declined medical attention, as he suffered only a scratch on his left hand. However, a watch he was wearing was broken as a result of the incident.
