Boy returned to custody of mother

A 14-year-old Sturgis boy was turned over to the custody of his mother after he was stopped by police for driving her vehicle through the city over the weekend.

Officers noticed a van without its headlights on and driving at a high rate of speed through downtown Sturgis around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. A westbound pursuit followed and concluded near Stubey Road, in Sturgis Township.

The driver and his 10-year-old brother fabricated a story to police. When their mother met them at the scene of the stop, however, the boys indicated they took the vehicle without consent and planned to stop at a store.
