Florence Pfenning, 85

Florence M. Pfenning, age 85, of Sturgis, passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 23, 2012, at Riverview Manor Nursing Home in Three Rivers.

She was born Jan. 13, 1927, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Arthur G. and Blanche (Pridgeon) Ledyard.

Mrs. Pfenning resided in Sturgis her entire life. On April 1, 1945, she married Richard C. “Dick” Pfenning in Sturgis. He died Oct. 25, 2003.

She retired from Freeman Manufacturing in Sturgis. She also had been employed by the Harvey Paper Company, the Kirsch Company for seven years and Harding’s Market, all in Sturgis. Her most-loved job for several years was working as a crossing guard at Wall Elementary School and she was a member of Sturgis Missionary Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda (Charles) Ware of Colon; two sons, Danny (Gilby) Pfenning of Surprise, Ariz., and Steven (Linda) Pfenning of Lewisberg, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Herbert Ledyard of Sturgis; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, June Frays of Centreville and Pauline Harker of Sturgis; and two brothers, Bill Ledyard of Watervliet and Frederick Ledyard of Sturgis.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Hackman Family Funeral Homes — Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Florence Pfenning will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Revs. Bob Renner and Dale Gerig of Sturgis Missionary Church will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Prairie River Cemetery in Centreville.
