Michael Jay Harker, age 55, lifelong resident of Sturgis, passed away early Friday morning, Oct. 26, 2012, at his home.
He was born June 27, 1957, in Sturgis, a son of Edwin and Wanda (Teall) Harker.
He had been employed by Morgan Olson in Sturgis for 28 years. He had also worked at Harker Electric, Indiana Custom Truck, Continental Accessories and Professional Climbers.
He was a member of the Sturgis Missionary Church, Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW, Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion and the Eagles Lodge #1314. Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding dirt bikes and making people laugh. Mike will be remembered by many for always taking time to help others.
He is survived by a son, Michael Harker II of Sturgis; a daughter, Shalane (Miguel) Alvarez of Sturgis; parents Edwin and Wanda Harker of Burr Oak; a sister, Marilyn (Dan) Weekly of Sturgis; a brother, Monty Harker of Sturgis; three grandchildren, Heidi Harker of Fremont, Ind., Miguel Alvarez of Sturgis and Mariah Alvarez of Sturgis; aunts, Joyce Adamski of Sturgis, Doris (Bob) Butz of Kendallville, Ind., Jacqueline Harker of Sturgis, Shirley Harker of Sturgis and Donna (Charles) Hess of Edwardsburg; uncles, Larry (Judy) Harker of White Pigeon and Rudy Boals of Sturgis; special friends Robin Wall and Tammy Gooch and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Miles Harker; his grandparents; and several uncles.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Hackman Family Funeral Homes — Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis, where full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
