Apartment fire in Kalamazoo

125 people were left homeless early Monday morning following a fire overnight at a Kalamazoo apartment building. The blaze broke out just before 11:30 Sunday night at the seven-story Northwind Hilltop Apartments. Fire officials say a third floor apartment was fully engulfed in flames when the first units arrived on the scene. The fire then spread to the apartment above on the fourth floor burning so hot it eventually caused the fourth floor to collapse. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety say many of the residents are wheelchair-bound and had to be rescued by stretchers. Seven residents were transported to local hospitals for minor smoke inhalation however none of the injuries were considered life-threatening. A firefighter also suffered a cut to the hand. 70 firefighters from 5 area departments battled the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.  (Michigan Radio Network)
