Salesman stole contents of purse

A vacuum-cleaner salesman stole the contents of a purse belonging to a Nottawa Township woman Friday.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department said a clean-cut black man in his 20s was allowed inside the residence to conduct a demonstration. While inside, he asked to use the bathroom and stole the purse from an adjacent room.

Once in the bathroom, he took from the purse a Social Security card, two credit cards and more than $200 in cash.

The man, who said he was from the South Bend area, stuffed the purse under the bathroom sink then continued with the demonstration.

The incident occurred in the 61000 block of Filmore Road.
