Board asked to spare cuts

Members of the St. Joseph County Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services board were asked Tuesday to spare cuts on its clients who are mentally challenged.

During the panel’s monthly meeting at its Centreville office, about two dozen clients gathered to ask that a proposed, 25 percent across-the-board cut not be leveled against the budget applicable to their services.

Funding from the agency, which reported a December deficit in excess of $70,000, allows clients to attend a sheltered workshop or receive needed in-home services two or three days a week instead of five. Those services are important for the clients because it allows them to live independently as part of their community, advocates for the adults said.

No board discussion on the matter took place, though the issue could be up for discussion at its Feb. 26 meeting.
