Emergency Care Network to phase out operations

The Emergency Care Network of St. Joseph County has decided to phase out its operations.

Board president Margaret Schultz said board members have concluded the food pantries serviced by the ECN have become adequately funded without the agency’s aid. Schultz said the ECN locations in St. Joseph County will remain open.

She said pantry site managers are expected to seek 501(c)(3) status in order to be eligible for United Way funds. She added the ECN recently deposited a large amount of money for pantries to purchase food from the Food Bank of South Central Michigan in Battle Creek.

The ECN has supported food pantries in Mendon, White Pigeon, Constantine, Three Rivers, Colon and Centreville. It also owns and maintains the County Closet in Three Rivers.
