Hipolita S. Lum, age 100, passed away Friday evening, Jan.18, 2013 at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.
She was born Aug. 22, 1912, in Mesa, Ariz., a daughter of the late Lazaro and Inez (Garcia) Salaz.
She had resided in Sturgis since 2004, coming from Yuma, Ariz., where she lived from 1947-2004.
While living in Arizona, she had worked as a cashier at several grocery stores and she was a homemaker.
She was baptized Jehovah Witness in 1954 and was actively involved full time in the ministry since 1986, and was currently a member of Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witness in Sturgis. She and enjoyed reading, gardening, crocheting and sewing, but what was most important in her life was her family and her ministry.
Hipolita is survived by four daughters, Lucy Barreras of Superior, Ariz., Helen DeLaPaz of Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Martha (Ron) Marshall of Sturgis; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jose S. Lopez; a daughter: Rosie (Tom) Montana; three grandsons; two sisters; and four brothers.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Sunday at Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witness, 66948 S. Nottawa St. in Sturgis, where a memorial service will begin at 4:30 Sunday. Mr. James Strang will officiate.
