Leo C. Hambright Jr., age 71, of Sturgis, passed away unexpectedly Sunday evening, Feb. 3, 2013, at his home.
He was born Sept. 25, 1941, in Union County, S.D., a son of the late Leo and Joy (Anderson) Hambright.
Leo was a longtime Sturgis resident and retired from the International Paper Company in Sturgis and had also worked at Sturgis Molded Products for many years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving his country during the Vietnam War. Leo was a member of Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion, Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW, Loyal Order of Moose #74 and the Eagles Lodge #1314. He was a fan of NASCAR and enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time at the lake.
He is survived by a daughter, Peggy Haarer of White Pigeon; three sons, Daniel (Stacy) Hambright of Ralston, Neb., Michael Hambright of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Todd Hambright of Omaha, Neb.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn Schutte of Oklahoma; Delores Kline of Colon and Patty Hagg of Olathe, Kan.; a brother, Kelly Bowen of Arkansas; a stepsister, Desiree Mieras of Sturgis; four stepbrothers, Phillip (Danielle) Hambright of Centreville, Robert (Jane) Hambright of Hart, Randy (Kim) Hambright of Sturgis and Keith (Kellie) Hambright of Sturgis; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Jerry Hambright.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends to remember the life of Leo C. Hambright Jr. and the sharing of memories and a meal will begin at noon Saturday at the American Legion, 500 W. Chicago Road in Sturgis, where full military honors will be conferred at 1 p.m. Saturday by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
