Mike Schmitt, 54

Michael Alan “Mike” Schmitt, age 54, of Mendon died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 at his home. He was born in Mendon on Jan. 13, 1959 the son of Clement C. and Joan L. (Dick) Schmitt and was a lifetime resident of St. Joseph County. Mike graduated from Mendon High School with the class of 1978. He was married to Vickie Musser in 1984, and they were later divorced. Mike was a lifelong farmer who had worked for Belson Farms, M.F.I. Seed Company, and Kauffman Farms. He was also a certified block maker and had worked for Consumers Concrete Company for 19 years. Mike was always fixing and restoring equipment and tractors. He also built two of his own homes, collected model planes and trains, and enjoyed fishing in his spare time.

Mike is survived by his significant other, Brenda Samson; two sons, Charlie (Heather) Schmitt and their son, Wyatt and Kenneth (Kristin) Schmitt and their daughter, Emily all of Colon; three siblings, Mary Lou (Cliff) Jepsen, Joseph Schmitt, and Kathy (Bob) Spence all of Mendon; his step-father, Eugene Stiteler of Mendon; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Clem in 1983; and by his mother, Joan Stiteler in 2011.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 13, 2013 at the Crossroads Missionary Church near Mendon. Burial will be in St. Edward Catholic Cemetery.
