Jim Summey, 74

James Alven Summey, age 74, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away unexpectedly early Saturday morning, March 16, 2013, at his home.

He was born March 18, 1938, in Sturgis, Mich., son of the late Anthony and Frances (Warble) Summey.

Jim resided his entire life in Sturgis with the exception of a short time he lived in LaGrange, Ind., and he was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1957.

He was first married to Marcia Stuck on Feb. 2, 1958. This marriage ended in divorce. He then married Lois Kussmaul and this marriage also ended in divorce. On Dec. 26, 1985, he married Jean Ann Lipscomb in Sturgis.

Following over 20 years of dedicated employment he retired from Rood Industries in Sturgis at the time of the business closing. Prior to joining Rood Industries, he worked at Formed Tubes in Sturgis for many years and also worked at the Motor Wheel Company.

Jim was a member of the Sturgis Salvation Army and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a life member of the Eagles Lodge #1314 and Loyal Order of Moose #574 and a member of Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion for over 25 years.

Jim enjoyed coin collecting, fishing, camping, sightseeing and traveling, walking and playing Bingo. He loved Robins and always looked forward to their arrival in the spring.

He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Jean; one daughter, Deborah (James) Julien of Burr Oak; two sons, Anthony Summey and Rex (Sheila) Summey both of Sturgis; two step-sons, Jason Clouse and Jerry (Sue) Clouse, both of Nottawa; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elma Sellers of Sturgis and Frances Rovner of Skokie, Ill.; two brothers, Floyd Summey of White Pigeon and George Summey of Centreville and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James Alven Summey Jr.; one grandson; six brothers; and five sisters.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-3284. Funeral services celebrating the life of James A. Summey will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Envoy DeWayne Duskin of the Sturgis Salvation Army will officiate. In accordance with his wishes cremation will follow the services.
