During their inaugural meeting Monday, members of the newly formed River Country Humane Society Board said a new animal shelter – jointly run with the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department Animal Control division – is the board’s top priority.
More than a dozen people who gathered at the St. Joseph County Intermediate School District agreed with the idea that replacing the current animal shelter is the primary objective of the five-member board.
RCHS members have their eyes on a 12-acre property in the west half of Centreville that, if secured, would serve as a perfect location for a new animal shelter. Members agreed funds could be raised, grants might be available and foundations to benefit a new shelter would be suggested to the public to help finance a new shelter.
The board’s next meeting is at 6 p.m. May 20 at the ISD.
