Tutors needed

Members of the St. Joseph County Literacy Council are hoping an appeal to the public will land a new batch of tutors needed in Sturgis.

Rebecca Lilly, head of the Three Rivers-based council, said between 25 and 30 people are on a waiting list seeking tutoring services in Sturgis.

Lilly said the list is comprised primarily of people who speak English as a second language. Prospective tutors, however, do not need to speak Spanish.

Potential tutors may set their own schedule as long as it’s compatible with the availability of the person they would work with. Lilly said most of the people seeking help are women in their 30s who have availability during the daytime, when their children are in school.

Each session takes 60 to 90 minutes and most couples meet once a week.
