Ione Charlotte (Meyer) Mestelle, age 90, was walked home to Jesus surrounded by her family on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Sturgis Hospital.
She was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Eagle Point, Wis., to George and Dagmar Meyer. She graduated in 1941 from Park Falls High School in Wisconsin and from Eau Claire Beauty Academy in 1943. On Nov. 20, 1944, she married Vincent L. Mestelle in Pittsfield, Mass.
Although Ione was a licensed beautician, she devoted her life to her family and community. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for nearly 60 years and was a member and past president of First United Methodist Women, She was also actively involved with her sons as a Sturgis Boy Scouts den mother.
Ione was president of the Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary; chair of the Medical Scholarship Committee, Tray Guild and Gift Service Guild; and served as a volunteer in the hospital for over 40 years. In addition, Ione was also honored as the 2006 Sturgis Citizen of the Year.
Surviving are her sons, Jeffrey Lee Mestelle of Beaver Island, Steven L. (Mary Jo) Mestelle of Sturgis, Peter L. (April) Mestelle of White Pigeon and Dan L. (Lisa) Mestelle of Ottawa, Ill; grandchildren Ryan Mestelle, Elisa (Shaun) Welch, Candace (Courtney) Hawkins, Alanna (Brandon) Steele, Jayme (Eric) Skogen, Casey (Bradley) Clemens, Kylie (Kyle) Booras and Jodi Mestelle (Eddie Martin); great-grandchildren Tyler Welch, Ciya, Comari, and Cayla Hawkins, Lyric and Laila Steele, Deacon and Porter Skogen and Tucker Clemens; a brother, Gordon (Jean) Meyer of Manistee and Venice, Fla.; a sister, Ramona Moormann of Marcellus; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Ione’s life will take place at a memorial service at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 26, at First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Pleasant St., Sturgis. Memorials may be directed to the Sturgis Hospital Medical Scholarship or First United Methodist Church.
