The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will start construction Monday on the M-43 (West Main Street) bridge over US-131 in Oshtemo Township, Kalamazoo County.
Work begins Monday on US-131 to accommodate lane closures and shifts when the M-43 bridge work begins, which is expected to start Sunday, July 7. During this first phase, there will be nighttime single-lane closures on US-131.
Starting Sunday, July 7, crews will begin repaving M-43 over US-131 and repairing the bridge. The $2 million investment includes replacing deck joints, bridge railing, and pins and hangers; recoating structural steel; and repairing the substructure. All work is scheduled to be complete by Friday, Nov. 2.
Also included in this project is the addition of a sidewalk on M-43 over the bridge. The pedestrian access will be added to the south side of the bridge, and is a feature Oshtemo Township officials have worked together with MDOT to add to the project.
During construction, two lanes of US-131 will be open at all times. There will be at least one lane of M-43 open in each direction throughout construction. There will be some ramp closures during construction, and those dates will be announced in advance of the closures. During ramp closures, the posted detour will redirect motorists to Stadium Drive and 9th Street.
