Medicaid bill approved in House

State Rep. Matt Lori last week applauded his House colleagues for approving a bill he introduced to reform the Medicaid system while expanding coverage for nearly half a million needy Michigan residents.

The measure cleared the House with strong bipartisan support, Lori said.

The reform includes several safeguards, which will provide those who come under the new guidelines to obtain affordable medical attention while at the same time moving toward a healthier lifestyle, Lori said.

Lori said the reform plan – which still requires a waiver from the federal government – contains key elements that will focus recipients on a path to better health and self-sufficiency.

After 48 months, new recipients will either purchase private insurance coverage through the exchange or remain on Medicaid while increasing their cost-sharing requirements, Lori said.

The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
