New Christmas decorations

The village of Colon is nearing a goal of $8,000 to purchase new Christmas decorations.

A fundraising effort spearheaded by the village and the Colon Area Chamber of Commerce will result in the purchase of 29 new decorations, which will be put on display in the downtown area for about six weeks starting around Thanksgiving. Chamber and village council member Edith Doenges said the old decorations were purchased in the 1970s and were in poor condition.

The new, LED-illuminated decorations will feature heralding angels, star clusters and wreaths. Doenges said the new decorations are coming from a plant in Marion, Ind.

Doenges said a late plea for additional donations is being made to help reach the $8,000 and additional expenses associated with wiring. Collection cans are at Colon Bait and Tackle, Dawn and Phil’s Cafe, and the Marathon station.

The old decorations are for sale on a first-come, first-served basis.
