More than expected in fundraising

Final numbers are still being calculated but a recent golf outing to help a local deputy has exceeded $35,000 in fundraising efforts.

The latest figure is more than the $20,000-plus organizers had originally estimated for a fundraiser in support of T.J. Baker. A 36-year-old deputy with the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, Baker recently opted to have his left arm amputated or risk further spread of cancer.

The St. Joseph County United Way, with the help of its financial and legal team, has established a T.J. Baker Fund, allowing family, friends and supporters the opportunity to help with medical expenses.

A new, prosthetic arm will cost upward of $150,000 and Baker is still unsure how much insurance will cover.

Donations can be made to St. Joseph County United Way.
