Residents be aware of scam

Three Rivers Police Chief Tom Bringman is advising residents to be aware of a scam that has resurfaced locally.

Bringman said UPS or FedEx service is typically employed to deliver documents and a check or money order as the result of an alleged winning a lottery or cash prize. Under the premise of covering taxes, recipients are urged to cash the check or money order and wire a portion of the amount to the sender to cover taxes.

Bringman said the check or money order are not real and the person cashing them is responsible for reimbursing the bank for the amount they received from the financial institution.

Bringman advised residents to take any suspicious checks or money orders to the police department or a bank to determine their validity, and to remember that taxes owed on any prize are never paid in advance.
