5K Memorial Fund successful

Thanks to the participation of about 125 people, Saturday’s 5K walk/run and 1-mile Fun Run helped raise approximately $7,200 for the 1 Lt. Jonathan W. Edds Memorial Fund.

In the four-year history of the walk and run – sponsored by the White Pigeon Parks and Recreation Department – more than $34,000 has been raised for the fund created in honor of the White Pigeon native killed in Baghdad in 2007.

Besides military memorials at Wahbememe Park, proceeds are put toward charitable and educational programs in White Pigeon.

Barry Edds, Jonathan’s father, used the occasion Saturday to announce plans for the erection of a Civil War memorial at the park. Unveiling of the $12,500 memorial is scheduled to take place in July or August next year.

He said 94 Civil War soldiers from White Pigeon and the surrounding area will be honored on the four-sided, vertical monument.
