Richard Allen Mayo, age 79, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Saturday, Aug. 7, 2013 at Thurston Woods Village.
He was born June 16, 1934, in Sparta, Mich., a son to the late Jesse E. and Mary A. (Bosworth) Mayo.
Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Army, earning the rank of SP3.
On Jan. 30, 1960, in Rockford, Mich., he married Catherine M. “Katy” Morrison. She preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 2004.
He was a graduate of Central Michigan University and has resided in Sturgis since 1970, moving here from Manchester, Conn., where he had been employed for Traveler’s Insurance.
In Sturgis he owned and operated the Sturgis Agency which later became Mayo and Associates Insurance Company from which he retired early because of his wife’s failing health.
He was a member of the Klinger Lake Country Club, the Sturgis Elks Lodge, and Kiwanis. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid golfer.
Surviving are two sons, Scott (Kelly) Mayo of Elkhorn, NE and David (Debbi) Mayo of Sturgis, Mich.; three grandchildren, Christopher, Taylor, and Ryan; two brothers, Charley Mayo of California and Bick Mayo of Brighton, Mich.; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a younger brother.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Richard A. Mayo will be held at a later date to be announced by the Hackman Family Funeral Home – Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091.
The family suggest memorial donation in his memory be directed to Thurston Woods Village, envelopes are available at the funeral home.
