One killed in motorcycle crash

A Sturgis woman has died as the result of a motorcycle accident Wednesday night in Constantine Township.

Carrie Gay, 30, died Thursday at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, where she was airlifted following the accident at Dickinson and Burke roads.

She was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by 32-year-old Charles Barfell, of Sturgis. He remains in serious condition at Bronson.

State police investigators said Barfell’s motorcycle was heading west on Dickinson Road when it struck the passenger’s side of a northbound vehicle driven by Brandalynn Schumacher, 28, of Sturgis.

Police said Barfell had the right of way at the four-way intersection, which is on the border of Constantine and Mottville townships. Schumacher, however, allegedly pulled her vehicle into the intersection after stopping, and into the path of Barfell’s motorcycle.

Neither Barfell nor Gay were wearing helmets, investigators said.
