Volunteers needed for river cleanup

The St. Joseph County Conservation District is looking for volunteers to help with Saturday’s cleanup of the White Pigeon River in a section within Mottville Township.

Starting at 10 a.m., the event is the sixth of seven river cleanups planned this summer by the Centreville-based agency. Event organizers are making an extraordinary effort to recruit volunteers, as the stretch of river is known to contain an abundance of debris.

Saturday’s work will focus on a 2.7-mile stretch between Vistula and Thomas roads. The task is expected to take four hours and retrieval of large items is expected.

Prospective participants are urged to wear swimming attire, an old T-shirt, and old tennis shoes and socks. Volunteers can meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Vistula Road bridge for an informative meeting and to arrange for drop-off of vehicles at the end point.

Prospective volunteers are asked to notify organizers so an appropriate number of canoes and kayaks may be reserved. Arrangements may be made through Jen Miller, at 467-6336, ext. 5.
