A Fort Wayne-based utility would like to remind its customers to beware of a scam by suspects looking for a quick and illicit windfall.
Indiana Michigan Power is reporting some of its customers are being targeted by scammers who falsely represent themselves as company personnel.
I&M officials said a threat to cut off electrical service is made if the potential victim does not settle an alleged debt by making a credit card transaction.
Another variation of the scam being reported is someone calling a potential victim andstating their electric meter is at risk of catching fire and must be replaced immediately.
Instructions are then issued to use a money order or pre-paid cash card to cover the cost of the fictitious new meter.
The scammers have shown a tendency to take advantage of non-English speaking residents and businesses.
