A household hazardous waste collection Saturday was declared a success by event organizers.
Sponsored by the St. Joseph County Solid Waste Committee, the twice-a-year drop off at the county fairgrounds featured hazardous waste, televisions, computers, tires, paper and cardboard, and latex paint.
Pat Kulikowski, solid waste committee secretary, said final numbers show the collection netted 256 tires, 20,000 pounds of electronics, 9,000 pounds of hazardous waste and expired medication, 6,000 pounds of latex paint and 5,500 pounds of cardboard, magazines and paper.
Kulikowski said the numbers were down from April’s collection but higher than what was taken in during the fall 2012 event.
The collection has been in place for eight years and will likely resume in April next year, Kulikowski said.
