Depot will be relocated

The Sturgis City Commission has agreed to relocate the city’s historic depot building from its current location on Main Street to 400 W. Chicago Road.

The decision by city officials this week come after years of discussions related to the relocation. Because it is considered a historic building, the choice was to move the building rather than renovate it.

City manager Mike Hughes said relocating the building will put it in a more visible area as a historic site.

The move has been advocated for years by the Sturgis Historical Society and it has endorsed the relocation.

Funding options are being finalized, Hughes said, adding the cost would not involve taxpayer dollars.
