Mary Naylor, 90

Mary Elizabeth Naylor, 90, departed this life on Nov. 11, 2013.

She was born Nov. 4, 1923, to Louis and Louie Inez Schmidtendorff of Mottville.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Naomi Ruth Schmidtendorff, brother Everitt U. Schmidtendorff, sister Treva Wheelock and her spouses, as well as her sister-in-law, Ona Berry, and brothers-in-law Ogle and Arden Naylor and their spouses. She is survived by her sister, Sylvia Lowell, and brother-in-law Albert Naylor and his wife, Jeanne, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was graduate of White Pigeon High School. On Aug. 30, 1941, she married Ora W. Naylor of White Pigeon. There were no children. She worked for C.G. Conn and was a correspondent for the Elkhart Truth and continued to write occasional articles into her 80s. She was a waitress at several restaurants in Elkhart and Mottville and then worked as secretary for the St. Joseph County (Mich.) Sheriff. She also was a secretary in the original office staff of Glen Oakes Community College. She was a fixture at the Mottville Township board and zoning board meetings and the unofficial historian of Mottville and the surrounding area. She loved old, historic houses and was an accomplished genealogist.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon.
