Black Gold Farms invites the public to help itself to as many potatoes as it can transport.
Ray Baker, manager of the Sturgis Township-based business, said limited capacity means the potatoes would otherwise end up being discarded.
Baker said the potatoes are supposed to be a certain size to conform with guidelines preferred by potato chip manufacturers. He said this year’s crop features a number of potatoes in excess of the ideal size.
He said size does not compromise the taste of the potatoes and other than being dirt-covered, the potatoes are perfectly edible after they have been subject to a thorough cleaning.
Baker said the potatoes will be available 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays only, until the supply is exhausted.
Anybody coming to gather potatoes are asked to bring their own containers. The production facility is at 69331 Klinger Lake Road, just off U.S. 12.
