Tragic accident

St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough has elected to not seek charges against the driver of a vehicle that killed a Sturgis man last month.

McDonough said the accident – on Bogen Road, west of M-66 in Sturgis Township – was unquestionably a tragic event. However, McDonough added, circumstances in the case do not warrant authorization of charges at this time.

Johnny Wood Jr., 22, died after he was struck by a vehicle driven by Don Hirschy, 60, of Sturgis. Even though he was walking in the roadway, Wood was difficult to see, Hirschy told investigators, because he was wearing dark clothes. The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Oct. 20.
