Two games away from state championship

A trio of area high school football teams claimed district crowns over the weekend and are two games away from playing for a state championship.

Mendon, Constantine and Schoolcraft all remain in the playoffs, while Cassopolis saw its season come to an end Friday.

For the third consecutive post-season, Mendon ended Climax-Scotts’ season. On Saturday, the Hornets won on their home field, 13-to-0. The 11-and-0 Hornets host 9-and-2 Muskegon Catholic Central at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Hornets and Crusaders have met in the playoffs five of the last seven years and Saturday marks their third consecutive meeting in the playoffs.

Constantine, which eked into the playoffs with a 5-and-4 regular-season record, defeated Hillsdale Friday, 56-to-14. The Falcons travel to Clinton for a match against the 11-and-0 Redskins; date and time will be announced today.

Schoolcraft, meanwhile, pulled out a 28-to-26 win over Watervliet Friday. The 10-1 Eagles travel to Shelby to play the 10-and-1 Tigers at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Cassopolis lost to Decatur, 7-to-0 and ends its season with a record of 7-and-4.
