Google Chromebook Notebooks for students

Starting next month, Colon Community Schools will be issuing to most of its students Google Chromebook notebooks.

More than 600 of the notebooks were purchased with money left over from the $15.1 million millage request approved by district residents a few years ago.

Interim Superintendent Jay Newman said the Samsung-made personal computers will be distributed starting in January from the senior class on down to second grade.

After researching the opportunity in October, board members agreed to the $200,000-plus it had available to purchase the notebooks.

Teachers will be provided units before Christmas break and have the chance over the two-week recess to become familiar with the devices.

The units come with a keyboard and mouse, and their most appealing aspect is their portability, Newman added.
