The murder of Sturgis-area CPA David Locey was chosen by a local newspaper as the top local story of 2013.
The Sturgis Journal has released its top stories in St. Joseph County for 2013, and the October murder of Locey was the unanimous top choice.
Following Locey’s murder, the March fire that destroyed Curly’s in Colon was deemed the second-biggest local news story of the year.
The list continues with the opening of the U.S. 131 Constantine bypass third; the death of Sturgis attorney Raymond Dresser and the sentencing of Nathan Lumbard tied for fourth; followed by Sturgis High School’s bowling team winning the state title.
The second half of the list begins with a street-improvement millage approved in the city of Sturgis; the downtown Sturgis development championed by John Gump; Sturgis soccer, Mendon volleyball and Bronson wrestling teams advance to state final four; the August passing of Three Rivers icon Bruce Snook was ninth; and a pair of White Pigeon Police Department members involved in an off-duty, drunken-driving accident was tenth.
Just missing the cut were Centreville voters approving a school-millage request and the early resignation of Glen Oaks Community College President Gary Wheeler.
