Verna M. Muckel, age 89, of Colon, passed away, Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Birch Adult Foster Care home in Leonidas.
Verna was born Jan. 9, 1924, in Hicksville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Roy and Leah (Mackey) Thomas.
She graduated from St. Joe High School in St. Joe, Ind., with the class of 1940. Verna had made her home in the Colon area since 1955, coming from Hicksville.
Verna had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Colon American Legion #454, where she had served as commander.
On Jan. 1, 1945, she married Edward D. Muckel in Hicksville. He preceded her in death Aug. 23, 1997.
Verna was a homemaker and enjoyed playing cards, casinos and, most of all, time spent with her family.
She is survived by her children: a daughter, Sandra (Randy) Jackson of Colon; and four sons, Lynn (Ronnie) Muckel of Coldwater, Jack (Annette) Muckel of Colon, Tom (Diane) Muckel of Constantine and Don (Rhonda) Muckel of New Era; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Florence Seitz of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers; and four sisters.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013 at Schipper Funeral Home in Colon. A funeral service celebrating the life of Verna M. Muckel will take place at 3 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Jason Muckel and Staci Paskievitch officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Colon with military honors conferred by the Colon American Legion. If desired, the family suggests memorials be made in memory of Verna to the Birch Adult Foster Care Home. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.,
